Are worrisome thoughts making you miserable? They rise up in your mind uninvited, like unsolicited junk mail in your inbox. How can you surrender your worries and fears?

And importantly, whom do you surrender them to?

When you need help, you naturally ask someone who has the ability, skills, and resources to match your needs.

For instance, you wouldn’t borrow money from a good friend who is in debt. Or expect your child to advise you on how to manage a difficult relationship. Even though your friend and your child want to help you, they can’t provide the help you need.

Then there are others who have the capacity to alleviate your situation, but they may not want to help you, or care about you.

So, aside from having the ability, skills and resources, the person whom you ask must sincerely care about you and have your best interests at heart. There should be no hidden motives or expectations.

Is there a generous benefactor who can be your “one-stop shop” for all the help you’ll ever need?

There is indeed. Who better than the limitless, loving universe? You can call it by any name you want—the Source, Creator, God (or any name of God), Higher power, Nature, All-That-Is, and so on.

No one person can give you the help you need in all aspects of your life. But by asking the universe, you can get help for any aspect of your life from one infinite source that never runs dry.

The universe, as its name suggests, has universal intelligence. It is supremely benevolent, with unlimited power and resources to bring you exactly what you need.

There is one catch though—you must be willing to surrender your worries and fears to it.

Most of the time, we don’t fully let go of our problems. We hold on to them, worrying about how the solution will come or fearing that it will require us to do something that we don’t want to do, or lose something (or someone) that we are attached to.

And so, it’s good to know what it means to surrender our worries and fears. How does one get to the stage where complete surrender is possible?

Here are six steps to surrender your worries and fears based on Saranagati—Surrender unto Him” a book by spiritual master, Swami Tejomayananda.

The 6 steps to surrender your worries and fears

1. A desire to strengthen your spiritual connection

Surrendering begins with a sense of dissatisfaction or disappointment with trying to get the right kind of help you need from others.

You feel people neither understand you nor do they understand your needs. You find them unreliable, inadequate or lacking the ability to help you with your problems.

You begin to want to strengthen your spiritual connection and to seek out a higher power that can help you.

2. Putting aside your doubts and disbelief

You may not fully believe in the existence of a divine higher power yet, let alone ask for help from it. But you’re open to putting aside your doubts. You start to be open to the possibility that the universe is benevolent and can help you.

You begin to shift your focus away from your reliance on worldly connections. You look for divine guidance and synchronicities in your life.

3. Believing that the universe has your back

To build a greater understanding and connection to the divine, you begin to read on spiritual and religious topics, listen to talks, or have conversations with other like-minded people.

These interactions inspire you and spark a feeling that there may indeed be a divine higher power that can help you.

You start to learn that no problem is too big or difficult for the universe. You understand that the universe has your back.  It will always provide a solution for you.

You begin to feel that if things didn’t work out exactly as you had hoped for, perhaps there was a greater good in it. You believe that the universe will never bring you anything that is harmful to you.

This feeling is reinforced when you remember the times when you had not gotten what you’d wished for and felt relieved on hindsight because you realised that those weren’t the right things for you.

In the next step, you put aside your worries, fears and doubts and actually ask the universe for help. “Please help me ….” and you describe the help you need.

5. Surrendering to the universe

In this step, you hand over the control of your problems to the universe and surrender your desire for any specific results.

“Guide me, help me. I am yours. Let your will be mine,” you pray. You surrender your worries and fears to the universe.

6. Expressing your helplessness

Lastly, you express your helplessness and inability in dealing with your concerns.

You continue your prayer, “I can’t do this by myself. I don’t even know where to begin. I really need your help. Please take over.”

The final step to surrendering your worries and fears—Have faith and let go

So long as you hold on to your worries and fears and think that you can handle them yourself, the universe doesn’t interfere. But once you sincerely reach out for help and surrender your worries and fears to it, it readily comes forward to provide it.

You have to have faith. Read: How to cultivate faith in the higher power.

The universe is always watching out for you, protecting you and bringing you what’s for your highest and best good.

It may not always appear to be so but whatever the outcome, know that your highest and best good will always promote your spiritual evolution.
