Making choices is an unavoidable and necessary aspect of our daily lives. There are times when we are faced with a situation in which there are many factors to consider. The course of action and choices may be unclear. Perhaps the people whom we know, cannot give us clear guidance. Or, we don’t know where to look and whom to ask.

Wouldn’t it be great if we knew how to get the right guidance to make the best decisions for ourselves?

Tuning in to the Divine

When you don’t know where to turn for help, the best place to go to is, any expression of the divine that you believe in.

You may call it God, Angels, Source or simply, the Universe. The idea is to turn to something higher and mightier.

Very importantly, you must have faith that this divine source is benevolent, all-powerful and is looking out for your highest and best good.

Here’s what you can do: Sit quietly and place your hands, one on top of the other, on your heart. Take two or three deep breaths. Invoke the presence of the divine in your mind. Simply say, “Dear (name of divine source), Please guide me on… (mention the issue). Thank you.”

The rule of threes

You must have faith that once you’ve asked, the answers will come to you. If there is a problem, there must be a solution. The universe being all-knowing, powerful and compassionate, will bring you the solutions. Your task after asking is, to be alert to recognize the solutions you are seeking as you go about your day.

You may get ideas to go to a certain place, meet someone or take some actions. You may hear the answers through the lyrics to a song, a conversation that you overhear or something that you watch on TV. You may get a call, an email or letter. You may even be surprised to know that the answers come out of your own mouth while speaking to someone.

The point is that the divine being infinite, will bring you the solutions through an infinite number of ways. All ways are its channels of communicating with you.

Here’s the rule – if it’s the right course of action, the message will get repeated at least three times. In other words, if you get the same feelings, ideas, or hear the same things, meet different people who say the same thing, three times or more, know that this is validation of the answer you are looking for.

You must then take action with full faith.

Feeling in your heart

Many times, we have to go in to a situation not knowing what to expect. Then, we have to make an ‘A’ or ‘B’ or, ‘yes’ or ‘no’ type of decision at the end of it. For instance, you could be interviewing a potential candidate at work, viewing a property which you are unsure of, or attending a meeting knowing that you will have to make a decision at the end of it.

Here is another technique that has worked for me again and again. It’s fool-proof if you follow it.

man with head on hands held in prayerHere’s what you do: Again, you will invoke the presence of the divine as I explained above. Then say this: ”Dear (name of divine source), I need guidance on (mention the issue). If this is the right thing/person for me, please let me feel it fully in my heart. Please let no doubts enter my mind. Thank you.”

Then, go into the situation and tune in to how you are feeling. If it’s the right person or thing, you will feel a sense of expansiveness and lightness in your heart. If it’s not the right thing, your heart will feel closed-in and you will have doubts and confusion in your mind.

Don’t try to cover up a negative feeling by justifying with left-brained arguments. You must be prepared to take the course of action that you feel.

The reason why this heart-centered exercise works is that you can intellectually justify any arguments for or against a situation, but you cannot control or deny how you feel. You can’t control or explain why you feel a certain way, you just do. Because you have invoked the divine for help, know that this feeling is the answer for you.

This technique has helped me time and time again.

Ask, then act!

The divine is speaking to us constantly. It wants to help; it wants to see us happy and achieve our goals.

If you doubt and don’t take action on your divine guidance, you will undermine your own future attempts to get clear answers. You will have doubts and the solutions will be unclear. So, ask and take the necessary steps you have been guided to take.

The more you act on your divine guidance, the clearer and easier the answers will come in the future. Making difficult life decisions will not seem as difficult if you seek out and follow your divine guidance.
