In Proof that you are a Spiritual being (Part 1/ 3), I explained that just as electricity enables appliances to function, Spirit enlivens the body, senses and mind and makes them appear to be alive and functioning.
You can’t see the real ‘spiritual’ you because you lie unseen, behind the body, senses and mind.

Now, you may argue that it’s your heart or brain that is keeping you alive – not Spirit. Is this true? Let’s think about it – what makes the brain or heart function?

I remember watching a documentary about a baby who was born with a congenital heart defect. They needed a new heart for the baby or it wouldn’t have any chance of survival. They found a suitable heart from another baby in a neighbouring city who had died soon after birth. Thankfully, the parents of that baby chose to allow their baby’s heart to be donated to give another child the gift of life.

I remember seeing the doctor hurrying down the hospital corridor to the operating theatre, carrying the normal heart in an insulated box lined with ice. Inside, the baby was already prepped and ready, waiting for the donated heart. Luckily, the heart transplant went off successfully and the baby had a new lease of life.

Now, let’s think about a couple of possible situations. Let’s say that the heart came too late and the recipient baby had died while waiting. Would the donated heart have the capacity to bring the dead baby back to life? Or, what if the living heart itself had died in transit? Would it be of any use to the living baby? The obvious answer to both scenarios is ‘no’. In both instances, a successful outcome would occur only if a living donor organ was speedily transplanted into an already living body.

It’s clear from these scenarios that it’s not the organs that keep the body alive. The organs are kept alive because of some other factor. We may not know exactly what it is or what to call it, but it is there, nonetheless. In this article, it’s being called, ‘Spirit’. It’s not anything outside of yourself, but intrinsically who you really are. Like the electricity behind the TV, the Spirit you is that which enlivens the body and mind.

Let’s talk about death

Let’s go a little deeper to prove that we are Spirit. Let’s talk about death. Have you ever seen a dead body? Have you ever wondered what happened to the person that was just there earlier?

I used to teach teenagers. I asked if any of them had ever experienced a death in their family or seen a dead body. One of the girls answered that she had recently gone through such an experience. She said, ‘We were with Grandma when she was in the hospital and we were there when they came to take the body away.’

dead body under sheetI pointed out that she had said they were with ‘Grandma’ when she was alive and then naturally addressed her after death as ‘the body’. Why did she do that? She herself was surprised and didn’t know why. I asked her if she ever thought that the body was still ‘Grandma’ after she had died. Without hesitation, she answered, “No!” There was no question in her mind that the dead body was not the person that was there before.

The real entity inhabiting a body leaves it at death

Even the way we describe a person who has died shows that the person inhabiting the body is no longer there.

Don’t we say, “She’s passed away” Or, “He’s dead and gone“?

If you speak a language other than English, do you also have a similar phrase about death?

Doesn’t this show that we all instinctively know that the person who was there before – the real person, is no longer there? He or she has left it and gone somewhere else. All that’s left is the shell of a body that starts to break down immediately.

The organs and body are only alive and functioning because of the presence of Spirit. In reality, you are not the personality identified with the body and mind. That is only a shadow of the real you, which is Spirit.

In the last part of this three-part article series, we’re going to go even deeper and learn how to identify with the real spiritual ‘you’.
