We all carry scars from past emotional wounds, small or big. These wounds can break open from time to time when they are scratched by the smallest things such as a passing comment, a particular smell, a song, a place, or an object.

Healing past hurts is never easy as the wounds are in the heart. How can you begin healing them?

Feelings are thoughts that are felt in the body as physical sensations. For example, anxious, angry or worrisome thoughts can express as shallow and erratic breathing, a headache or digestive issues.

Releasing these emotions and their corresponding physical symptoms entails changing the underlying negative thoughts. You can’t dismiss them through reason or logic. They have to be released through some technique that engages the heart.

In this post is a guided meditation for healing past hurts that remain in your psyche as negative emotions such as anger, pain, resentment, jealousy, hatred and unforgiveness.

You can think of these negative emotions as salt that you are carrying around day and night.

How big would be the quantity of salt you are carrying? Would the salt be a teaspoonful, a cupful, a bucket-full . . . or would it be even bigger?

No matter what size of container you think you have, it has to be emptied to free yourself from the emotional load you are carrying. Even a teaspoon of salt would become burdensome if you cannot pour it out.

Holding on to negative emotions and brooding over the past are like rocking in a rocking chair. You’ll find yourself in exactly the same place as you were when you started rocking. The only change is that you’ll be mentally and physically depleted.

The best way to unburden yourself is to give up your “salty” emotions to the divine.

You can see the divine as a higher power, God, nature, the universe, the creator or any other way that uplifts your mind and evokes loving feelings in your heart.

You may think it’s not right to give your negativity to the divine. You may be harboring the idea that you must only give what is good to the divine. But the divine is the ALL. All things deemed to be good and bad exist in it. The infinitely powerful universe supports everything and can transmute all negativity.

Whether you hold on to your burdens or surrender them to the divine, both you and your burdens are being carried by that higher power. Holding onto them yourself would be like carrying your suitcase on your shoulder while traveling on a train. Whether you hold on to your luggage or put it on the floor, it is the train that is carrying you and your belongings. (The train here represents the higher power.)

Anchor into the divine for healing past hurts

small boat on ocean at sunset anchoring into the divine for healing past hurts. For stability in life, it is wise to anchor your faith in the divine. It would be just as if you were in a boat on the sea. You would find stability and safety by dropping your anchor into the seabed.

In the guided meditation below, I lead you through a visualization where you approach the ocean with your container of salty emotions and release them into the water. The ocean in the meditation represents the benevolent and loving higher power.

The ocean will have absolutely no problem absorbing any quantity of salt that you put into it. It will remove your pain and cleanse you. In fact, it is waiting for you to ask for help.

In the meditation, I lead you to imagining the ocean lovingly respond to you by reassuring you that it will free you of your burdens. I then share an affirmation of blessing that will open your heart. It’s important to have faith in the higher power and form a deeper relationship of love with it.

Find about twenty minutes when you are well rested and alert to listen and follow along with the guided meditation for healing past hurts below. I hope you will find it useful.
